What Makes Stainless Steel Resistant to Corrosion?
The short answer is chromium. Stainless steel contains a minimum of 10.5% chromium by composition, and when chromium is exposed to oxygen, it forms a thin, stable oxide layer on the steel’s surface. This is called the passive layer.

Grade 304: The Workhorse for General Mining Applications
Grade 304 is the most commonly used stainless steel in the world, and it’s the default starting point for most mining applications that don’t involve heavy chemical exposure. With approximately 18% chromium and 8% nickel, it offers reliable corrosion resistance across a broad range of environments.
So what is 304 stainless steel used for in a mining context? Structural components and frames in sheltered or dry areas, equipment housings, ore screening panels, general fabrication, and conveyor system components, including the tube used in roller shells, all sit within its capabilities. Its weldability and workability make it practical for both manufactured equipment and site repairs.
The limit of grade 304 is chloride exposure. In applications where the process water contains chlorides or where acidic solutions are involved, 304 will pit and crevice-corrode over time. In those environments, the correct upgrade is 316.
Grade 316: Corrosion-Resistant Stainless Steel for Demanding Process Environments
Grade 316 adds approximately 2 to 3% molybdenum to the 304 composition, and that single addition significantly expands its useful range. The molybdenum improves resistance to pitting corrosion in chloride-containing solutions and increases resistance to a range of acids encountered in mineral processing.
For process piping in leaching and solvent extraction circuits, tanks and vessels handling acidic solutions, pumps handling corrosive slurries, and conveyor rollers in wet or chemically active areas, 316 is the appropriate grade. Its low-carbon variant, 316L, is commonly specified for welded assemblies where sensitisation at the heat-affected zone could otherwise compromise corrosion resistance.

Duplex Stainless Steel: Where Strength and Corrosion Resistance Both Matter
Duplex grades, including the widely used 2205, combine an austenitic and ferritic microstructure. The result is roughly double the yield strength of 304 or 316, combined with excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking, which is a failure mode that particularly affects austenitic grades under sustained tensile stress in chloride environments.
